Course description: An intensive, practical course for those who would like to improve their fluency of speaking as well as pronunciation. This will be done through active and varied use of natural language in different contexts and registers using up-to-date, inspiring materials such as film extracts, video clips, TED talks, online lectures and broadcasts. A chance to engage in debates and discussions on a variety of topics will be given.

3. Reading Addicts, unite!

Level:  C1

Course description: This course is designed for all the books and reading lovers out there, especially those who have completed a regular university English class at the levels B2+ or C1. 
The aim of the course is to activate and advance all language skills with a particular emphasis on reading, speaking and writing. In every class, a selected short story, or a book, becomes a springboard for developing students’ discussion, listening and vocabulary skills. This is achieved by the use of additional authentic, up-to-date and inspiring materials such as film excerpts, video clips, TED talks, online lectures etc. The course includes elements of writing, both in and out of class, and provides plenty of grammar and lexical practice in how to express ideas in an orderly and elegant manner.

4. Academic writing

Level:     C1

Course description: The course is aimed at PhD and postgraduate students who are keen to improve their academic writing skills. The course will help students gain more understanding of typical features of academic style, genre and writing process. As writing is not solely an individual process, students learn to cooperate with others in the process of peer reviewing and peer editing. What additionally broadens the perspective is the fact that participants come from different faculties and bring in their knowledge of various practices in different fields.

3. Critical Thinking in Philosophy

Course description:  The aim of the course is to develop students’ skills at critical thinking in the context of philosophical texts. Additionally, students revise their knowledge of philosophy and learn how to express their opinions in a logical and coherent manner. The course is addressed mainly to students of philosophy, but anyone interested in the subject is very welcome. The course is based on a book The Great Philosophers by B. Magee, which is a series of dialogues with contemporary philosophers such as: F. Copleston, J. Passmore, or A.J. Ayer who discuss different philosophical ideas from ancient to modern times. The book, as befits philosophy, is composed in the form of a dialogue and it is dialogue which is the most important form of learning during the course. Students can freely discuss their arguments both with each other and in teams in order to reach the most logical conclusions. We will read extracts from: Plato’s Dialogues, Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, Hume’s Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Schopenhauer’s On Women, and others. Additionally, we will use blended learning method by following Mr Magee’s dialogues with contemporary philosophers on the internet.

4. History and Human Thought Reflected in Art

Course description:  The course is designed for students of humanities, especially students of history, history of art, preservation of cultural heritage as well as anyone interested in the subject matter. It is based mainly on academic and critical papers as well as myriad of visual aids. Special attention is given to comparative analyses. Topics covered in the course combine elements of: art, history, religion philosophy, etc. and will also depend on students’ choice. Additionally, the course touches upon contemporary social and cultural issues in relation to academic discourse. Another essential aim of the course is to practise delivering speeches of varying length and level of formality.

English for Specific Purposes

 

1. Legal English

Level:        C1 / B2+

Course description: This upper-intermediate to advanced level course in Legal English, although primarily addressed to students who need to be able to use English in their law studies and future legal profession, may also be of interest to those from other departments, such as Administration or Business Studies, who wish to enhance their knowledge of law and master legal terminology. The aim of the course is to develop students' legal English skills, expand their vocabulary and help them use the language actively and responsibly in both legal context and academic situations (presentations, seminars, lectures). The course, encompassing the main areas of law: civil and criminal, contract, commercial and company law, the law of intellectual property, as well as litigation and international arbitration, is based on selected up-to-date legal English coursebooks, authentic reading and listening materials and actual case studies. Not only are the students introduced to the basic concepts found in the legal systems of the UK and the USA as well as those existing in the Polish system, but they are also constantly encouraged to compare aspects of the law in their own jurisdiction with those of common law countries. Participants  are regularly asked to do further online research on various course topics and present its results in class.

Course description:
The course focuses on different topics from neurology through applied psychology to psychiatry. Students have a chance to have a glimpse into the mechanics of the human brain, find out what goes on in the mind of a psychopath, test their own personality, study different psychological disorders, as well as ask themselves what intelligence is and whether we should try to endow machines with it, etc. The course is based almost entirely on authentic materials from the British and American media. As it includes a wide variety of materials, it is both informative and enjoyable. It is addressed to students of any field who share an interest in contemporary psychology.

Course description: The course is designed for students who are keen on the cinema and the new media and would like to develop their knowledge by reading, watching and discussing materials closely connected with this field. During the course students will have a chance to read and talk about issues related with the cinema and television, as well as to write texts in response to what has been covered.
The topics relate not only to all-time classics like Pixar and Disney movies or Sherlock Holmes, but also cover technical issues of film making like script writing, sound effects, film music etc. The course is based on authentic materials, specifically adapted for its needs.
